British court declares tennis legend Boris Becker bankrupt

Six-time Grand Slam winner Boris Becker declared bankrupt by registrar who once watched him play Reports: German tennis star Boris Becker declared bankrupt

However, the registrar rejected the plea and said: "It is not often the case that a professional person has a judgment (debt) outstanding against them since October 2015". Once the mortgage property is signed, Becker could have started repaying his United Kingdom bank debts.

The registrar said of Becker, Wimbledon men's singles champion in 1985, 1986 and 1989: "One has the impression of a man with his head in the sand".

But lawmakers in London decided he has had enough time, calling his money issues "a historic debt".

Mr Becker, now a coach and TV pundit for the BBC and other media, was not at the hearing in London. "Surprised and disappointed that Arbuthnot Latham choose to bring these proceedings against me", Becker said in a statement that he released through a series of tweets.

"This order relates to one disputed loan which I was due to repay in full in one month's time", he said. It is disappointing that my requested for today's hearing to be postponed was refused!

The tennis star's lawyers called for "a real last chance" for him to settle his debts which were outstanding since 2015.

His advocate, John Briggs, told the registrar that someone in Becker's position would not be prone to benefit from bankruptcy and it was likely to have an adverse effect on his "image".

His lawyer was requesting one more month, as Becker was reportedly remortgaging his property in Majorca, which would have gotten him over $6 million.

Becker retired from tennis after a stellar career in 1999 and has since worked as a television commentator and, between 2013 and 2016, as former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic's coach.

At age 17, he became the youngest player ever to win the Wimbledon men's championship.
