Larson outlasts Elliott at Michigan again

Lucia Summers | 20 June, 2017, 01:42

Larson and Martin Truex Jr. combined to lead all but six of the first 150 laps before a caution for a Ryan Sieg spin.

None of the Hendrick Motorsports cars led a lap Sunday or seriously challenged for then win, and while speed seemed to be an issue, Elliott kept plugging away.

Larson started from the pole, led the most laps and was able to hold the lead throughout three restarts over the last 20 laps to give himself a Father's Day present.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin barely edged out NASCAR Xfinity Series driver William Byron to win Saturday's Xfinity Series race at Michigan International Speedway by 0.012 of a second, the closest margin of victory in Xfinity Series competition at MIS since the advent of electronic scoring.

On top of that, Larson didn't even think he was worthy of being the second-best auto.

"I think, restarted third or fifth that time and got loose off of (turn) two, and I got freight-trained down the backstretch", Larson said. He's led laps in 11 of the 15 races this season, but is still without a win. "He was the class of the field". Joey Logano was third, Denny Hamlin took fourth and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top five.

The finish was similar to the race at MI last August, when Larson took the lead on a restart with nine laps left en route to a Cup win.

Truex's blue Auto-Owners Toyota was in control of the race, but when the caution came out on Lap 151 of 200 he restarted fifth after taking four tires and fuel. Nobody else has more than four.

Building materials in London fire under scrutiny
She says she will receive daily reports from the stricken neighborhood, where hundreds of people have been displaced. He said the government is carrying out an "urgent inspection" of other tower blocks in Britain to assess safety.

Patrick finished last after being knocked out by the accident on the 190th lap. The inside lane, typically not the preferred groove, doomed him to a sixth-place finish.

Nor was the occasion lost on Larson, who has been bringing his two-year-old son Owen to press conferences of late. With 21 laps to go, crew chief Todd Gordon called him to pit road, restarting outside the top 15. But even he couldn't do anything to catch Larson and wound up third.

Truex and Larson were 1-2 in the points standings coming into the race, and Truex was second to Larson in qualifying.

"From where we started the day to where we ended up, I'm pretty proud of the effort", Elliott said. "He had probably about a second on me". So I wasn't really that nervous.

While it was the same 1-2 finish as far as driver names, this victory had a much different vibe than the one last August.

It was the third Cup win of Larson's career - and second in a row at MI. Larson had dropped back several positions early in the third stage that made up the final 90 laps of the race.

"Stewart-Haas, they were one of our key teams", said Chevrolet's NASCAR manager Alba Colon. We are very honest about that. "I was just trying to be smooth, hit my marks, not make mistakes, not let Chase get close to me". Busch and teammates are getting closer and closer to getting wins. "To see how Chip Ganassi Racing has a step up in the game has been fantastic". Larson, Kenseth and Bowyer rounded out the top five. Truex has 20, Jimmie Johnson (thanks to three victories) has 15 and Larson has 13.

With two race wins under his belt, Larson is now aiming to earn as many playoff points as possible. It was unreal. Hope we can keep some of that moving forward.
