Intel Debuts 18-Core, 36-Thread Processor

Intel Corporation Sets Cinbench World Record Intel Co. (INTC) Stake Maintained by Bonness Enterprises Inc.

The flagship will be the new Core i9 processors, which are the first CPUs to have the Core i9 branding - previous CPUs have been tagged either Core i3, i5 or i7.

The most expensive chip in the new lineup is the Core i9 Extreme Edition, which is the first consumer desktop CPU with 18 cores and 36 threads. The company notes that Core X series performs 10 percent faster in multi-thread and 15 percent faster for single thread over the last generation. The Core i9 appears to be the spearhead for a new wave of powerful Intel processors, named the Core X series.

Intel said that nearly all of the Core X chips are built on an updated version of the Skylake X architecture with the exception of the two 4-core versions, the i5-7640X and the i7-7740X, which are based on Kaby Lake. The next line up - the Core i7 X-Series - ranges from a $339, 4-core, 8-thread model to a $599 8-core, 16-thread processor.

The high-end i9 model, the Intel Core i9-7920X will feature 12 CPU cores, will support 24 threads, will be priced at $1652 and is planned for an August release. Moreover, it lets Intel cater to the needs of the users who need more power. The 18-core beast at the top of the pile will retail for $1,999 (~£1,554), while the 10-core Core i9-7900X still goes for an eye-watering $999 (~£777).

Far from her best, Kvitova shows she still has it in Paris
Petra Kvitova has made a winning return to tennis as she became the first player to reach the second round of the French Open . Mattek-Sands, the world number 117, will face 2010 Roland Garros finalist Sam Stosur of Australia for a place in the last 16.

Otherwise, the company says the new chips are made with "advanced gaming, VR and content creation in mind".

Most of the Core X CPUs are built using the enhanced version of Intel's older architecture, known as Skylake-X which powers most of the CPUs in the latest release catalog. The processor will have 10 cores and 20 threads, 13.75MB in cache memory and a frequency of 3.3GHz, with boost clocks of 4.3Ghz and 4.5 Ghz and support for quad-channel DDR4-2666 memory.

Those thinking of buying a i9-7980XE and AMD ThreadRipper processor might not see the performance gains they hope for however, as a lot of consumer software will not be written to efficiently spread workloads between the many cores and caches in these chips.

The Intel Core i9 Extreme, that comes with 18 cores and 36 threads, will come with a price tag of $1,999. While we do not have launch dates for all of the processors yet, and many are just labeled as Q2 2017, we do have prices for the entire line. Intel recently announced they would make Thunderbolt 3 royalty-free and integrate into future CPUs.
