In the reports, leaked emails alleged to have been sent between the Guptas and their employees uncovered links to incidents of state capture including the appointment of Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane.

Senior members of Mr Zuma's governing ANC this weekend tabled a motion of no confidence against him - which has been put to a closed-door meeting of the party's National Executive Committee.

The rand gained the most among major currencies on Tuesday and Wednesday after Bloomberg reported the ANC leadership may discuss Zuma's ouster, and strengthened 0.3 percent to 12.8792 per dollar by 8:28 Johannesburg.

The NEC meeting received the Political Overview from the president, the National Working Committee (NWC) report, and reports on the ANC's engagements with traditional leadership and preparations towards the National Conference.

US stocks ended little changed on Friday ahead of the long holiday weekend, though indexes ended a two-week streak of losses and consumer shares were strong for a second day.

The ANC stood by Zuma at a similar meeting in November in a debate about whether he should step down, and analysts poured cold water on chances of him being ousted or quitting before his term as party head ends in December.

While only Parliament can legally force the president from office, the NEC could instruct Zuma to resign, as it did Thabo Mbeki in 2008, or tell its lawmakers who occupy 62 percent of the seats in the national legislature, to remove him.

Zuma's ties to the Gupta family, Indian immigrant businessmen accused of trying to manipulate top government leaders for financial gain, have also stirred public anger.

He said on Friday he was "not opposed to establishing a commission of inquiry", without specifying a timeframe. In the letter, the veterans did not call for Zuma's removal but called on the NEC to reflect on whether decisions taken to absolve the president lived up to the expectations of South Africans.

Zuma is facing mounting pressure against him within the ANC, opposition parties and civil society, since he sacked Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan in March.

He said this explained why the ruling ANC veered away from the constitutional route.

According to the news portal, Zuma continues to dominate the highest levels of the ANC despite growing internal challenges.

Mantashe said the calls for Zuma to step down "are not so much about removing the President but rather dislodging the ANC itself from power".
