G7 leaders fail to reach climate change accord

After Trip's Final Day, Trump to Return to Tumult at Home AP News in Brief at 12:04 a.m. EDT

His announcement came as a summit of G7 leaders in Sicily, Italy, was wrapped up in deadlock over the issue on Saturday, with USA partners voicing frustration at Trump's failure to commit to the deal aimed at stemming global warming.

"Donald Trump should have learned this week that breaking our commitments under the Paris Agreement would be an unmitigated disaster for the United States", Sierra Club Global Climate Policy Director John Coequyt said in a statement.

During his campaign preceding the 2016 election, Trump summed up his stance on combating emissions by telling a SC crowd, "I want to use hair spray".

The stalemate leaves the country's future role in the climate accord in flux, though Mr. Trump promised to make a decision in the week ahead on whether the United States will be the first of 195 signatories to pull out.

However, the other G7 leaders pledged to "reaffirm their strong commitment to swiftly implement the Paris Agreement".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel characterized climate change talks with Trump as "very unsatisfying".

President Emmanuel Macron of France said he had told Trump that it was "indispensable for the reputation of the United States and for the Americans themselves that the Americans remain committed" to the climate agreement.

Exxon CEO Darren Woods wrote a personal letter to Trump earlier this month, urging him to stick to the deal.

Cohn told reporters the president's views on the Paris climate agreement are "evolving".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was "very hard, very unsatisfactory to have a whole discussion about climate change, with six G7 leaders against one".

During the campaign Trump repeatedly promised that the U.S. would withdraw from the agreement if he was elected, but tweeted Saturday that he will make a decision on the matter this week.

Abandoning the Paris agreement would carry a high political cost internationally and face fierce opposition at home in the USA from environmental activists and American corporations that are investing heavily in cleaner technology.

The leaders also reaffirmed their dedication to the Paris Agreement - that is, all did but President Donald Trump.

Members of his administration are deadlocked about whether the USA should uphold the agreement.

"There have been differences, to be sure, in some past summits, but not a sharp open split like this", he said.

"We're gonna have a lot of strength and we're gonna have a lot of peace", he told them.

"We respect President Trump's choice to reflect further on their engagements around climate change and the Paris accord", Trudeau said.

Donald Trump has told "confidants" that he plans to pull out of a major worldwide climate change agreement.

With the United States refusing to commit to the Paris Agreement, Group of Seven (G7) leaders on Saturday admitted that they could not make a joint statement on climate change.
